Events: CLUTCH Magazine Release Party Recap

Last week, I hosted CLUTCH Magazine’s spring 2011 release party. This release party was extra special because it was not only the release of our 10th issue but it was also my last release party serving as the PR Director for CLUTCH.

All in all, this experience has been amazing! I accomplished everything that I wanted to accomplish including starting the CLUTCH blog, offering an online edition of the magazine, and throwing the hugest release parties in CLUTCH history. I’ve been able to gain experience in event planning and social media all while working for the magazine I once saw on MTV back in 2007.

CLUTCH Team - love them!

I am so blessed that I was able to serve as the PR director for the past two semesters & am anxious for any future opportunities that might come my way next semester. To all of you who are interviewing for director positions this week, good luck! This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you won’t regret!

Spotlight On: ShoeDazzle

What’s my latest obsession? ShoeDazzle of course!

Just two months ago, I had no idea what ShoeDazzle was & now I am officially addicted! ShoeDazzle is a site that offers amazing shoes – all for only $39.95 + free shipping!

How it works: When you sign up, you will complete a style survey. This style survey will be used in order to assure that the shoes they recommend to you will suit your personal taste. Each month, ShoeDazzle will update your showroom with several different types of shoes, handbags & jewelry. Between the 1st and 5th of the month, choose your favorite item(s) that you want to purchase or skip out on the month. There is no obligation to buy each month & joining is 100% free. I joined just to check the site out & had no idea whether I would actually buy a pair of shoes. I ended up buying a pair my first month of joining & another pair the next month.

The first pair I purchased were the Estinas. I had been looking for a black bootie similar to it & was unable to find the perfect pair especially at the perfect price. I loved the style of the Estina & after reading up on their super easy return policy, I decided to give ShoeDazzle a try. The shoes arrived quickly, fit true to size & were extremely comfy – I was hooked! The next month I checked my showroom only to find the perfect pair of nude wedges which would be perfect for my summer internship in New York.

I love this site because it allows me to find the unusual styles I have been searching long & hard for at a reasonable price. You can also earn style points which can later be used to get a free pair of shoes – LOVE!

If you live in Tallahassee, make sure you come out to CLUTCH Magazine’s Spring 2011 Release Party next Tuesday, March 15th at the Filling Station. If you come right at 9pm & are one of the first 25 guests, you will be taking home a ShoeDazzle gift card. Otherwise, sign up here & you will receive 20% off your first order.

A Fashion Year in Review: 2010!

As the end of 2010 is upon us, I wanted to take this time to reflect on the past. As far as fashion, it is clear that this year three brands dominated my heart this year. These three brands include French Connection, Marc by Marc Jacobs & Wildfox Couture. Thinking deeper than that, I compiled a list of my favorite finds this year.

This list included a Theory blazer, Gucci sunglasses, French Connection dress, Michael Kors watch, Wildfox Couture sweatshirt, Marc by Marc Jacobs bag, Juicy Couture riding boots & the Marc by Marc Jacobs perfect purse. Although some of these items made the list because they were a killer deal, they have all become staples in my wardrobe this year.

But of course, this is a time for not only reflecting on fashion, but also on myself personally. 2010 was a major year in my life & I am thankful for everything – the good times and bad.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

-Served as the secretary for FSU’s Collegiate Merchandising Association, ran for 2011 President & lost by one vote but no regrets – everything happens for a reason!
- Became the Public Relations Director for FSU’s CLUTCH Magazine. Instantly began working on finding a way to publish an online version of the magazine (for free, of course!) & starting a blog.
- Completed my first internship with Intern Queen Inc. and will continue on as a campus ambassador next semester
- Met Andrea through my summer internship with Intern Queen Inc. & we collaborated in the fall to create the first-ever #CampusFashion Twitter chat – HUGE success!
- Became a campus ambassador for Kembrel where I began increasing awareness of this awesome website on Florida State’s campus while also saving up money to intern in NYC this summer

After reflecting on all that I have accomplished in one year, I am looking forward to the next chapter in my life & what all year 2011 will bring.

Happy new year everyone & thanks for reading! xoxo

College Life: What I Learned By Interning

I have been interning for Lauren Berger, the CEO of Intern Queen Inc., for the past six months. Next week will be my last week interning so I have been looking back and reflecting on everything that I have learned – both personally & professionally.

1. The Power of a Follow Up – Since interning for Lauren, I noticed how often I was following up with people whether it was planning the CLUTCH Magazine release party, applying for an internship, or simply asking a question. You wouldn’t believe how many people are actually thankful – not annoyed – that you are following up with them. Especially when it comes to internships, ALWAYS follow up to make sure that they actually received your materials. They might just be bombarded with resumes but the act of the follow up will give you an edge over your competition.

2. Network with EVERYONE – During college, don’t be selective. Keep in touch with ALL of your contacts. You never know when you might need them or vice versa. This is especially true if you are still not 100% sure of what career field you would like to go in. Organize your contacts into an excel document including their name, company, position, email address, phone number & their preferred method of communication. It’s also important to not abuse this relationship. Keep in mind that this is a give-take relationship – ask what YOU can do for THEM.

3. ALWAYS Call to Decline an Internship Offer - I got the opportunity to listen to Lauren speak at this year’s Teen Vogue Fashion University in New York City & she has mentioned this same advice before. Provided you are only applying for internships that you actually want, always say yes to an internship offer. If you get another internship offer which you feel is the better fit, pick up the phone & call the first company. You will be able to convey your genuine apology for declining the internship over the phone rather than an email.

4. Personalize your Cover Letters & Tailor your Resume - You won’t believe how many people we see apply for internships with “Dear Seventeen Magazine” for a Lucky Magazine internship. This is a sure sign that you are sending out the same cover letter for multiple internships. Personalize both your cover letter & resume for the job and company you are applying for. Also, keep your resume to one page. Anything that wasn’t covered in your resume, bring up in your interview and/or cover letter.

5. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions - If you are unsure, don’t hesitate to ask! If you can get away with asking another intern, do that first. In general, your boss will be thankful that you had the courage to ask a question rather than try it out on your own & make a mistake.

All in all, I have had an amazing time interning for Intern Queen Inc. If you are interested in interning for Lauren, go ahead & apply for her summer 2011 internship program. You can also join the campus ambassador program (no FSU students please, we already have two!) – email me if you are interested & I will let you know what all you need to do.

Must-Haves: Fall 2010

Here in Tallahassee, it is slowly starting to feel like fall. What are my must-haves this season?

1. Gold Watch - it seems like everyone is choosing a nice gold watch as their go-to accessory this fall. The leader of this gold watch trend? Michael Kors, of course!

2. Fur Vest – during these cooler months, I am loving the fur vest. Wear a fur vest over a simple long sleeve t-shirt for an ultra-chic yet simple to pull off look.

3. Riding Boots - since buying the perfect brown boots at Coach a few years ago, I have been craving a great pair of black boots. I finally stumbled upon these amazing black Cadley riding boots by Juicy Couture in New York.

4. Deep Red Nail Polish - I am a huge fan of pink nail polish for the spring & summer months but have decided to trade them in for a nice, deep red. If you have an Ulta Beauty store near you, try their brand name nail polish in 34 Plum Street for only $5.

5. Lace Up Booties – I found a pair very similar to the pair shown above at Nordstrom Rack and they are absolutely adorable. They are the perfect shoe to wear to pull off a more Western style look for fall.

6. Double Finger Rings – I have been loving the double finger rings ever since seeing Lauren Conrad’s personalized double finger ring but lately, this trend seems to be popping up everywhere. LF Stores had a great selection of double rings when I went in New York but online, I feel that Topshop has an amazing selection.

7. Long-Sleeved Lace Dress – countless numbers of FSU students showed up in a fabulous lace dress for the CLUTCH Magazine release party which has left me craving one of my own.

What are your fall 2010 must-haves?
